International calling guide
Calling Abroad Without the Bill Shock: Which UK SIMs Make Sense?
The cheapest plan is not the one with the largest number beside "international minutes". It is the one that includes the country, number type and calls you actually make.
The short answer
Lebara is the easy all-rounder, but it does not win every call
If you call several countries and want ordinary UK data in the same plan, start with Lebara and Lyca Mobile. Both build international minutes into mainstream SIM plans. Lebara says its plans cover calls from the UK to more than 50 countries, with the allowance depending on the plan.12
For frequent calls to one destination, especially Pakistan, Bangladesh, Nigeria or Ghana, a country-specific Talk Home plan may make more sense. For China, Hong Kong and nearby destinations, CMLink deserves a separate look. This is less glamorous than declaring one universal winner, but it is also less likely to leave you paying 40p a minute because "international" turned out to mean somewhere else.
Lebara remains the tidiest place to begin if its destination list covers your calls and Vodafone reception works where you live. Its referral route advertises an introductory 50% discount, but offers and allowances can change, so confirm both the country and final price before paying.3
The useful shortlist
Four networks worth checking
Lebara
Best for: a simple UK plan with broad international cover
Every current Lebara SIM-only tier includes an international allowance. The smaller plans include a set number of minutes, while selected higher tiers include much larger or unlimited allowances to eligible countries.12
The catch: "over 50 countries" is not every country. Standard mobiles and landlines may be included, but premium and unusual number ranges can be charged separately.
Lyca Mobile
Best for: comparing a clear ladder of international allowances
Lyca's current online range includes a 10GB plan with 200 international minutes, a 50GB plan with 500, and a 100GB plan with unlimited international minutes. All three list the eligible countries on the plan page.654
The catch: some destinations or prefixes are landline-only or mobile-only, and online new-customer conditions can differ from shop or existing-customer terms. Read the list, not merely the large number.
Talk Home
Best for: heavy calling to one named country
Talk Home sells dedicated international plans for destinations including Bangladesh, Ghana, India, Nigeria, Pakistan, Poland and Romania. The allowance changes sharply by country, which is exactly why a destination-first comparison matters.8
The catch: a specialist calling plan may not be the best everyday data plan. Compare the whole monthly cost, not only the overseas minutes.
CMLink Mobile Duck
Best for: China, Hong Kong and selected East Asian destinations
CMLink's Mobile Duck monthly plans include 100 international minutes to 12 destinations, among them mainland China, Hong Kong, Macau, Taiwan, Japan, Singapore, Thailand and South Korea. They also include a separate Hong Kong roaming allowance.11
The catch: the included list is narrow. It is a specialist option, not a substitute for checking dozens of countries.

Pick the call, then the SIM
A destination-first shortlist
India and Bangladesh
Lebara and Lyca both include these countries on eligible plans. Talk Home adds country-specific options, so compare the minutes you receive at the total monthly price. If most calls are to one person with reliable internet, an app call may still cost less.
Pakistan
Do not assume a broad country list includes the number you call. Talk Home publishes dedicated Pakistan allowances, while Lebara's live country and number-type rules should be checked before choosing a plan.
Nigeria and Ghana
These destinations can be expensive outside a bundle. Talk Home lists dedicated plans for both. Compare those with Lebara's current country list and any add-on, then price the number of calls you really make.
China and Hong Kong
CMLink is built around this corridor and includes both calls and Hong Kong roaming on its Mobile Duck plans. Lyca also lists China and Hong Kong among eligible destinations on the plans reviewed here.114
Europe, North America and Australia
Broad bundles are common, so the winning plan may come down to UK data and local signal rather than international minutes. Lebara and Lyca both cover many popular destinations in these regions. Check mobile versus landline eligibility.
Anywhere not on the headline list
Compare a dedicated country plan, PAYG rates and app calls. One excluded destination can undo a month's saving remarkably quickly.
Where cheap calls go to hide
Five bits of small print that matter
- From the UK is not roaming.International minutes usually cover a call made while you are in the UK. Using the SIM abroad is a separate question with separate rules.
- Landline and mobile are not interchangeable.A country can be included for landlines but not mobiles, or the other way round. Check the symbols and prefixes beside the destination.
- Premium numbers are usually outside the bundle.Conference lines, satellite services and special-rate numbers can attract extra charges even when the country is included.
- Unlimited still has rules.Personal-use and fair-use conditions apply. A consumer SIM is not a bargain call-centre trunk in disguise.
- Introductory prices end.Compare the normal renewal price and the allowance that remains after any promotion.
The free-looking option
WhatsApp, FaceTime and Signal may be cheaper
If both people have a decent internet connection, an app call uses data rather than international voice minutes. On home Wi-Fi, that can make the mobile plan's international allowance largely irrelevant.
Ordinary calls still earn their keep. They work when the other person has no smartphone, weak mobile data or a number that belongs to a bank, hospital, office or elderly relative who regards WhatsApp as something that happened to the English language.
A sensible setup can use both: app calls for long chats and bundled minutes for real phone numbers. Buying unlimited international minutes for two short landline calls a month is an expensive way to avoid opening a calculator.
Before you buy
A two-minute check beats a surprising bill
- Write down the countries you call and whether each number is a mobile or landline.
- Estimate a normal month's minutes. Do not plan around the annual Christmas marathon.
- Open the provider's current destination list and search every country.
- Check excluded prefixes, fair-use rules and what happens after the allowance runs out.
- Compare the full plan: UK data, local coverage, roaming and normal renewal price.
- Use Ofcom's postcode checker for the places where you actually use the phone. It compares predicted 4G and 5G signal and explains why buildings, terrain and congestion can change reception.12
If Lebara survives those checks, use the referral route and confirm the discount in the basket. Do not pay because a button on an independent site looked confident.
Questions before the first call
Quick answers
Which UK SIM is best for international calls?
Lebara is a strong all-round choice for broad included destinations, while Lyca Mobile is worth comparing across several allowance levels. Talk Home can suit heavy calling to one named country, and CMLink is a specialist option for China, Hong Kong and selected Asian destinations. The right answer depends on the exact number you call.
Does international calling mean I can use my phone abroad?
No. International calling usually means calling another country from the UK. Roaming means using your SIM while outside the UK. Check both sets of terms if you travel.
Are mobiles and landlines both included?
Sometimes, but not always. Lyca's plan pages mark exceptions for mobile-only and landline-only destinations, and other providers can exclude prefixes or specialist numbers too.4
Is an unlimited international plan really unlimited?
It is still subject to the provider's eligible destinations, number types and fair-use policy. Read "unlimited" as unlimited eligible calls for normal personal use, not every overseas number without conditions.
Should I choose a SIM by network coverage first?
Yes, if the signal is doubtful at home or work. A generous calling allowance is not much help when the phone cannot hold a call. Ofcom's checker lets you compare postcode-level predictions before switching.12
