UK eSIM guide
eSIMs Without the Alphabet Soup: A Practical UK Setup Guide
An eSIM is a SIM without the fiddly bit of plastic. The useful question is whether your phone and network will agree to use one.
The short answer
An eSIM changes the setup, not the signal
An eSIM is a digital network profile stored inside a compatible phone. It replaces the removable card, but it does not create better coverage, faster data or cheaper calls by itself. Those still come from the network and plan.
Choose one when you want service quickly, need two lines on one phone, or would rather not wait for a SIM in the post. Keep the plastic card when your network's eSIM support is patchy, you often move service between handsets, or your backup phone belongs in a museum.
The sensible order is phone, network, plan. Apple says eSIM works on iPhone XS, XS Max and XR or later, subject to network support. Google says every Pixel 4 and later supports eSIM, while older Pixels have regional and operator exceptions.12
Before buying anything
Find the EID, then check the network
Open the phone dialler and enter *#06#. If the information screen includes an EID, the handset has eSIM hardware. EE and O2 both recommend this check. You can also find an EID in the phone's settings or on its box.983
Do not stop there. A phone can support eSIM while a particular network, plan or regional version does not. Check the provider's compatibility page for the exact model number, not just the family name. "Galaxy" covers rather a lot of phones.
Good signs
- An EID appears in settings or after dialling *#06#
- The network lists your exact model
- The checkout offers eSIM as a delivery choice
- The phone is running current software
Reasons to pause
- No EID appears anywhere
- The phone was bought in another region
- The provider says "coming soon" for your device
- You cannot access the account that owns the number
UK mobile companies have been banned from selling locked handsets since December 2021, but an older phone may still be locked. Check before switching networks rather than discovering it after the old SIM stops working.5
A five-minute insurance policy
Prepare before you scan the square
- Connect to reliable Wi-Fi.The phone must download the eSIM profile. A café connection that drops every thirty seconds is an avoidable complication.
- Update the phone.Install the latest software available for the handset, then charge it properly before starting.
- Keep the old line active. You may need a security text, app login or approval on the old device. Do not cancel first.
- Open the QR code elsewhere. If the code arrived by email, display it on a computer or another phone. You cannot point a phone's camera at its own screen, however optimistic you feel.
- Keep the code private. An eSIM QR code belongs to your mobile account. O2 and EE warn that their codes are single-use, so do not post or forward one.89

How to install an eSIM
On an iPhone
Open Settings, then Mobile Service or Cellular, and tap Add eSIM. Choose the option your network supplied: transfer from a nearby iPhone, scan a QR code, use a provider link or enter details manually.
Apple's Quick Transfer only appears when the provider supports it. If the option is missing, ask the network for its activation route rather than repeatedly restarting two innocent phones.1
On a Pixel
Open Settings, choose Network and Internet, then SIMs and Add SIM. Follow the prompts to download a new eSIM or transfer an eligible line.
Menu wording moves between Android versions. The EID remains the useful clue when the marketing name and settings menu disagree.23
On a Samsung Galaxy
Open Settings, choose Connections, then SIM manager or SIM card manager. Tap Add eSIM or Add mobile plan, then scan the network's QR code or enter the activation details.
Samsung says supported Galaxy phones can use a pre-assigned plan, QR code or manual activation details. Availability still depends on the model, country and provider.4
After installation
Name the line, choose which SIM handles mobile data, and make a real call. Turn Wi-Fi off briefly and open a webpage. A promising signal icon is not a completed test.
Do not delete the eSIM while troubleshooting unless the provider tells you to. Deleting a profile can mean obtaining a replacement rather than scanning the same code again.
Keeping the number
Converting and transferring are different jobs
Conversion changes a physical SIM into an eSIM on the same phone and network. Transfer moves an existing line to another phone. Porting moves your number to another network. Mobile sites have managed to give three different jobs almost the same button.
On an iPhone, a supported provider may offer Convert to eSIM or Quick Transfer. EE also supports conversion through compatible iPhone and Android settings. Where those options do not appear, use the provider's app or request a replacement profile.19
Wait for the new line to make calls, receive texts and use mobile data before wiping the old phone. When a transfer activates, the old SIM may be deactivated. That is normal, but it is a poor moment to realise the account password lives in a text you can no longer receive.
Two lines, one pocket
Dual SIM is useful if you set the defaults properly
Many compatible phones can keep a physical SIM and eSIM active together, or use two eSIM profiles. You choose a default line for calls, texts and mobile data. O2 confirms that supported dual-SIM devices can use two active numbers, although the combinations depend on the handset.8
For travel, keep your home number active for essential calls and security texts, then use a local or travel eSIM for data. Turn data roaming off on the home line. Also check whether the travel package is data-only. A plan labelled "UK eSIM" does not automatically provide a UK telephone number.
Do not delete your home eSIM merely to make space unless you know how the provider replaces it. Stored profiles and active lines are not the same thing, and different phones allow different numbers of each.
The Lebara position
Lebara's eSIM rollout is still narrow
Lebara's current UK help page says new-customer eSIM is available first for people joining with an Apple iPhone Air, with more devices due later. Existing customers have a separate transition route. That means an eSIM-capable iPhone, Pixel or Galaxy is not automatically eligible for a new Lebara eSIM today.6
If your phone is not supported, the practical choice is a physical Lebara SIM or a provider with eSIM support for your exact handset. Vodafone Pay as you go Plus currently offers eSIM to new and existing customers with compatible devices, while O2 offers it on eligible Pay Monthly, SIM-only and Pay As You Go plans.78
Prefer Lebara's international minutes and rolling plan? Use the referral route for a physical SIM, then confirm the 50% introductory price in the basket. Do not buy on the assumption that eSIM conversion will appear later.
When activation sulks
Fix the ordinary failures first
- Confirm Wi-Fi works by loading a fresh webpage.
- Check the phone has current software and restart it once.
- Make sure the eSIM is switched on in SIM settings and selected for mobile data.
- Check flight mode is off and the old line has not been chosen as the data SIM.
- Do not keep rescanning a one-use QR code. Ask the provider whether it has already been consumed.
- If the phone shows no service, quote the EID and IMEI when contacting support. These identify the eSIM hardware and device.
O2 says most activations finish within minutes but some can take longer, and it asks customers to contact support if activation is still incomplete after 24 hours. Your provider's timing may differ.8
Quick answers
Questions before you switch
Does eSIM give better signal than a physical SIM?
No. Both connect to the same mobile network. Coverage and speed depend on the provider, local network, plan and phone, not whether the subscriber profile lives on a chip or removable card.
How can I tell whether my phone supports eSIM?
Dial *#06# and look for an EID, then check the provider's list for your exact model. An EID proves the phone has eSIM hardware, but the network and plan must support it too.98
Can I keep my number when moving to eSIM?
Yes, when your provider converts or transfers the existing line. Moving to a different network is a separate number-porting process. Keep the old service active until the move completes.
Can I use an eSIM and physical SIM together?
Many phones can, but the permitted combination varies by model. Check how many profiles the phone stores and how many lines it can keep active at once.8
Does Lebara support eSIM on every compatible phone?
No. Lebara's current new-customer route is restricted to Apple iPhone Air, with wider support promised later. Check its live help page before ordering.6
