One deadline, two activation methods
How Long Do You Have to Activate a Lebara SIM?
You have up to 30 days from the order date. The actual switch-on should be much quicker: a physical SIM activates when the phone starts, while Lebara says an eSIM should activate instantly once its setup is complete.
The short answer
Activate within 30 days of ordering
Lebara says you have up to 30 days to activate the SIM, counted from the order date. If you do not activate within that period, Lebara says you will no longer be able to use the plan or promotion chosen with the order.1
Do not read that as "activation takes 30 days". It is the window in which you must start using the SIM. The switch-on itself should happen as part of setup.
If you are still choosing a plan, open the current referral journey and confirm the discount, allowance and normal renewal price before paying.
Same word, different questions
Keep the deadline separate from the setup time
How long can I wait?
Up to 30 days from the order date.1
How long does setup take?
A physical SIM activates when the smartphone is switched on with the SIM inserted.2
How long does eSIM take?
Lebara says it should activate instantly after the QR or manual setup is completed.3
That distinction matters. Waiting for network registration for a few minutes after setup is one thing. Leaving an unopened SIM for weeks is another.
Physical SIM
Activation should happen when the phone switches on
For a smartphone, Lebara's instruction is simple: insert the SIM and switch on the phone. For a feature phone, dial 5588 and wait for the automated voice.2
- Insert the SIM correctly.Match the cut corner and make sure it sits flat in the tray.
- Switch on and wait for signal.Give the handset a little time to register on the network.
- Test a call and mobile data.Turn Wi-Fi off briefly for the data check, otherwise your home broadband may take the credit.

eSIM
Finish the installation while connected to Wi-Fi
Lebara says a QR-code eSIM should activate instantly after you scan the code and enter the confirmation code. Manual activation should also be instant after the phone is connected to Wi-Fi and you complete the on-screen instructions.3
"Instantly" is Lebara's wording, but it still follows the setup steps. Keep the emails containing the activation and confirmation details until the eSIM is installed and tested. If the phone shows no service after setup, restarting it once is more productive than scanning everything with increasing indignation.
The envelope has been sitting there
What to do near or past the deadline
If you are still within 30 days
Activate now, then test the connection. Do not wait for the day you plan to transfer your old number. Activation and number porting are separate jobs, and proving the new SIM works first is the safer order.
If 30 days may have passed
Lebara's help page says the chosen plan or promotion can no longer be used after a failure to activate within 30 days of the order date.1 It does not say on that page that every late SIM is permanently useless, so do not invent a diagnosis. Contact Lebara with the order details and ask what remains available.
If the promotional order cannot be rescued, compare the current price afresh rather than assuming the old checkout terms still apply. Check the live referral route before placing another order.
After activation
Inactivity has a different timetable
Lebara says that if a SIM has not been used for a call, text or internet access in the previous 90 days, you need to add credit or buy a plan to resume services.2
The same help page says the SIM expires after a further 365 days without usage or a top-up or plan purchase, at which point you need another SIM.2 Those are rules for a SIM after it has been in use. They do not replace the original 30-day deadline attached to an order and its chosen promotion.
The low-drama approach
A sensible activation plan
- Order only when you can receive it.The deadline starts from the order date, not delivery.
- Activate shortly after arrival.Early setup leaves room to fix a handset or delivery problem.
- Test before porting.Make a call and use mobile data before moving your old number.
- Keep the paperwork.Retain the SIM packaging and order details until everything works.

Quick answers
Lebara activation timing questions
When does the 30-day clock start?
It starts from the order date, according to Lebara, rather than the delivery date.
Does a Lebara SIM take 30 days to activate?
No. Thirty days is the deadline for activation. A physical SIM in a smartphone activates when you insert it and switch on.
How quickly should an eSIM activate?
Lebara says it should activate instantly after the QR-code or manual installation steps are complete.
Should I wait to activate until I port my number?
No. Activate and test the Lebara SIM first. You can arrange the number transfer afterward.
What happens if I miss 30 days?
Lebara says you can no longer use the plan or promotion chosen with that order. Ask Lebara what options remain for the SIM itself.
Is the 90-day inactivity rule the same thing?
No. That applies after a SIM has gone unused. The first activation deadline is up to 30 days from the order date.
