Independent Lebara guide

Check the signal, not the sales patter

Lebara Coverage Checker: Test the Signal Before You Switch

A postcode map can spare you a miserable switch, provided you read it properly. Check indoors, outdoors and along your actual week before you move an important number.

The short version

Start with a full postcode, then refuse to stop there

Lebara has an official network coverage page.1 Enter a full postcode for each place that matters. A town name is too broad and your phone cannot live at the centre of a postcode district just because the map finds that convenient.

Next, run the same places through Ofcom's Map Your Mobile. It separates predicted coverage from local performance and lets you compare the Vodafone network used by Lebara with the other main networks.2

Do not check only your front door. A useful test includes the room where you use the phone, your workplace, the commute and any regular place where a missing signal would be a nuisance rather than a charming digital detox.

What good, variable, indoor and outdoor really tell you

Ofcom's coverage view shows whether 4G or 5G is predicted indoors or outdoors and whether the result is good or variable.2 Those labels are not decorative. They describe different levels of confidence.

Good indoors

The most reassuring result for ordinary home use. It is still a prediction, not a personal guarantee for the back bedroom.

Good outdoors, variable indoors

Worth testing inside. Thick walls, coated glass and the room's position can turn a promising street into a sulky sofa.

Variable outdoors

Treat this as a warning if calls, navigation or data matter there. Test before moving your number.

Ofcom says Map Your Mobile uses signal-strength predictions supplied by the network operators and gives separate indoor and outdoor results because buildings can weaken reception.3

The performance dial answers a different question: how likely people in the wider postcode district were to get a connection capable of streaming video. It is useful context, but it is less precise than the pin on the coverage map.2

Make the map follow you

Run the room-and-route test

  1. Home, room by room.Check the main living space, bedroom and home office. If the result changes across the building, that is the result.
  2. Work or study.Use the building's full postcode and inspect the indoor layer. Basements and deep-plan offices deserve suspicion.
  3. Your commute.Pan along rail lines, roads and stations. Ofcom specifically says its tool can explore workplaces and commuting routes.4
  4. Weekly essentials.Add family homes, school, gym and any rural stretch where you regularly need maps or calls.
  5. The busiest hour.If possible, test with a SIM when and where you normally use it. A quiet Sunday is a poor stand-in for a packed weekday train.

A map is a forecast

Why your phone may disagree with the checker

Ofcom lists mast distance, hills, buildings, trees, congestion, building materials, weather and the phone's antenna among the factors that can change what you receive on the ground.2

Its checker also mixes two kinds of evidence: predictive data from network operators and crowdsourced information based on people's real experiences.4 That is better than one national percentage, but it still cannot reproduce your exact handset behind your exact wall at your exact busy hour.

Ofcom is blunt about the uncertainty. Some people inside a predicted area will not get the service they need, while some outside it will.3 A marginal result calls for a trial, not optimism with a SIM ejector pin.

When the walls win

Weak indoors does not always mean unusable indoors

Lebara says WiFi calling can make and receive calls over WiFi when the mobile signal is poor.7 It can be a sensible fallback at home if your broadband is reliable and your phone supports the feature.

Lebara also says there is no extra charge for WiFi or 4G calling, though calls still come from your plan's UK minutes or use standard PAYG rates without an active plan.7

That does not rescue weak mobile data during a power cut, outside the building or on the commute. Judge the fallback against the problem you actually need to solve.

Do not blame the postcode for Tuesday's outage

Separate lasting coverage from a temporary fault

A coverage map tells you what signal is normally predicted. It does not prove the network is healthy right now. Vodafone's coverage page points users to its separate Network Status Checker for service updates or issues.5

If service normally works and suddenly vanishes, check the Network Status Checker before rewriting your whole buying shortlist. If the map has always shown variable indoor coverage and the signal has always been poor, that looks rather less temporary.

The buying decision

What to do with the result

  • Good in all important placesCompare the plan and price. Open the referral route, then confirm the live discount and later standard charge before payment.
  • Good outdoors, variable indoorsTest inside with the phone you intend to use. Check WiFi calling only if it solves your actual indoor need.
  • Variable on a vital routeTry the service before porting. A bargain that loses navigation or calls every weekday is an oddly expensive bargain.
  • Poor where it mattersCompare a provider on another host network. Price cannot improve radio coverage.

If the signal evidence holds up, check the current Lebara referral offer. Offers and eligibility can change, so let the live checkout settle the price rather than an old screenshot.

Quick answers

Lebara coverage checker questions

Which coverage checker should I use for Lebara?

Use Lebara's official checker first, then compare the Vodafone result in Ofcom's Map Your Mobile. Lebara uses Vodafone's UK network.

Should I check indoor or outdoor coverage?

Both. Indoor coverage matters for home and work, while outdoor coverage matters on streets, routes and open spaces. A good outdoor result can still come with variable indoor reception.

What does variable coverage mean?

It means the connection is less certain than a good result. Check the precise spot and activity you care about, then test with a SIM if the place is important.

Why is my signal poor when the map looks good?

Maps are predictions. Walls, trees, terrain, congestion, mast distance, weather and your handset can change the real result.

Can WiFi calling fix weak indoor coverage?

It can carry calls and texts over a suitable WiFi connection on a compatible setup, but it does not improve outdoor reception or mobile data away from WiFi.

Should I move my number straight away?

If any important place looks marginal, test first. Move your number after the signal has earned your confidence.
