Fix the call, not your entire phone
Lebara International Calls Not Working? Check Plan, Credit and Dialling
When an overseas call refuses to connect, check three things before poking every setting in sight: the number format, the right sort of minutes or credit, and whether the phone is attached to Lebara or Vodafone.
One test saves ten guesses
Does every call fail, or only this international one?
Call a normal UK mobile or landline first. If it connects, your SIM and local calling service are alive. The likeliest culprits are then the overseas number format, the destination, your international allowance or PAYG credit.
If the UK test call also fails, look at the network name and signal before buying anything. Lebara's own troubleshooting page says the phone should display Lebara or Vodafone.1
If you are choosing a plan rather than repairing an existing one, check the current referral plans and read the international-minute allowance on the selected plan.
The zero is a frequent stowaway
Rewrite the number in international format
Lebara's instruction is precise: dial the international code, then the country code, then the mobile or landline number without the zero at the beginning.1
- Start with + or the international access code. The plus format is easier to save in contacts because it also works when you travel.
- Add the destination's country code.Do not guess it from the flag beside a messaging profile.
- Remove the local leading zero.If the domestic number begins 0, that zero normally disappears after the country code.
- Delete stray extension symbols.Dial the main number first. Enter an extension only after the call connects.
For example, a saved local pattern such as 098XX XXXXXX becomes +91 98XX XXXXXX for India. Do not copy both the country code and the leading zero. That is two front doors for one address.
Minutes and money are different pots
Check the plan allowance, then PAYG credit
Standard mobile and landline calls to eligible destinations can use Lebara international minutes.2 Open MyLebara and check whether the plan is active and whether any international minutes remain.
If the allowance has run out, your plan does not include the call, or you use PAYG, Lebara says standard PAYG rates apply and you need PAYG credit.23 A healthy data allowance does not pay a per-minute international charge.
Lebara says you can see the balance by dialling *#1345#, hear it by dialling 5588, or check MyLebara online or in the app.1
Need a fresh allowance? compare the current referral plans, but confirm the destination and minute allowance rather than buying by data alone.
Included country, ordinary number
Check the destination and number type
An international allowance is not a blanket pass for every number abroad. Check the exact destination against our Lebara international minutes country list, then make sure the number is a standard mobile or landline.
Lebara says international premium numbers cost the applicable international rate plus 60p per minute.3 It also publishes a separate list for special rural destinations. If the number belongs to a bank, airline, conference line or remote service, use the live rate tool before trying again.
When even the UK test fails
Reconnect to Lebara or Vodafone
If the phone does not show Lebara or Vodafone, Lebara recommends a manual network reset: open network selection, choose a different network, search again, then select Lebara or Vodafone.1
- Turn flight mode on and off. This gives the phone a quick chance to register again.
- Restart the phone.Unfashionable advice, annoyingly often useful.
- Open mobile network selection.Temporarily turn off automatic selection if the manual list is hidden.
- Select another available network. It may reject the connection. That is part of Lebara's reset instruction, not the final choice.
- Search again and choose Lebara or Vodafone. Then repeat both the UK test call and the international call.
Do not reset the whole phone or erase an eSIM for this. A network selection reset is a much smaller hammer.
Where is the SIM?
If you are abroad, use the roaming rules
This guide is mainly for calls made from the UK to another country. If you are using the Lebara SIM abroad, you are roaming. The eligible destinations, add-ons and call route can differ, so use the roaming not working guide instead.
Still save the number with a plus sign and country code. That prevents a contact saved in a domestic format from becoming useless as soon as the phone crosses a border.
Give support a useful handover
What to collect before contacting Lebara
- The full number pattern: hide the final four digits in chat screenshots, but include the country code and prefix.
- The exact failure: write down any spoken announcement or on-screen message.
- Plan and balance: note the active plan, remaining international minutes and PAYG credit.
- Test results: say whether UK calls work and whether another number in the same country connects.
- Network: record whether the phone displays Lebara or Vodafone after the manual search.
Lebara lists chat and phone support from 7am to 11pm UK time every day. Dial 5588 from a Lebara SIM or +44 207 0310791 from another network or outside the UK; the latter can cost whatever your operator charges.4
If the line is new and your existing plan is the wrong fit, check today's referral choices. Fix a network or number-format fault first, though. A larger plan cannot repair an extra zero.
Quick answers
Lebara international call problems
Why does my Lebara international call end immediately?
Check the saved number for the country code and an unwanted leading zero. Then confirm the destination and number type are covered, the plan is active, and international minutes or PAYG credit remain.
How do I dial an international number from a Lebara UK SIM?
Use +, the country code and the mobile or landline number without its local leading zero.
Do I need PAYG credit if I have international minutes?
Standard calls to eligible destinations can use the plan allowance. Lebara says PAYG credit is needed when the allowance is exhausted, the plan is not eligible or the SIM is being used on PAYG.
Why can I call UK numbers but not an overseas number?
That points towards the overseas number format, destination, number type, allowance or credit rather than a complete loss of calling service.
What network should a Lebara phone show?
Lebara's troubleshooting page says it should display Lebara or Vodafone. Use manual network selection if neither appears.
Will topping up definitely fix the call?
No. Credit helps when a PAYG charge applies, but it cannot fix a mistyped number, an unsupported destination or a network registration fault. Check the live rate before adding money.
