Lebara Roaming in Dubai and the UAE: Charges, Add-Ons and Setup

Lebara's Roam Like Home list covers named EU and EEA destinations plus India and Ukraine. The UAE is not on that included list. Lebara's guidance says standard roaming charges apply outside its included areas unless you buy a suitable add-on.¹

This is about a UK-issued Lebara SIM used in Dubai, Abu Dhabi or elsewhere in the UAE. It is not a guide to a Lebara service issued in another country, and it is not about a separate travel eSIM.

A UK plan may include plenty of domestic data and international minutes. Neither means you can use the same allowance freely in Dubai. International minutes cover calls made from the UK to eligible countries. Roaming covers your phone connecting to a foreign network while you are abroad. Similar vocabulary, very different bill.

If you are choosing a new UK SIM for use mainly at home, compare Lebara's current referral plans. Do not choose a UK plan solely for a Dubai trip without pricing the roaming add-on or a local alternative as well.

The current UAE choices

Lebara's 8-day and 15-day Dubai roaming add-ons

Lebara currently lists the United Arab Emirates on two add-on pages. The smaller option costs £4 for eight days and includes 1GB of roaming data, 10 roaming minutes and 10 roaming texts.² The larger option costs £12 for 15 days and includes 3GB, 30 roaming minutes and 30 roaming texts.³

The clock starts when you buy the add-on and runs until 23:59 UK time on the final day. Lebara recommends buying while you are still in the UK, on your travel day.² Buying it a week early would turn a travel product into an unusually expensive calendar decoration.

Calls made within the UAE and calls back to the UK use the voice allowance. Incoming calls also use those minutes. Outgoing texts within the UAE or back to the UK use the text allowance; incoming texts are free.³ Calls or texts to a third country can fall outside the allowance, so check the live terms before making them.

Is a Lebara add-on enough for your Dubai trip?

The 8-day add-on suits a short visit where hotel Wi-Fi carries most of the load and mobile data is reserved for maps, messages, ride bookings and boarding passes. One gigabyte is a useful emergency pocket, but it is not a licence to stream video beside the pool.

The 15-day option gives you 3GB and more calling room. It fits a longer holiday or a work trip with light mobile use. It can still disappear quickly if photo backup, app updates or laptop tethering are left running.

Consider a UAE local SIM or a reputable travel eSIM if you need much more data, expect to tether a laptop, or want a package designed around local use. Compare the total data, validity, hotspot rules and number requirements. A separate eSIM also lets you keep the Lebara line available for incoming SMS while routing data through the travel line, provided your phone supports dual SIM correctly.

Keep in mind that some internet calling services may be restricted or work differently in the UAE. Do not buy a large data package on the assumption that every calling app will behave exactly as it does in Britain.

Do the boring checks before the airport

Set up your Lebara UK SIM before travelling

1. Activate and test the SIM in the UK.Lebara says the SIM must be activated in the UK before travel or roaming will not work abroad.¹
2. Confirm the UAE appears on the add-on page.Do this again on the day you buy. Product pages and country groups can move.
3. Buy close to departure.The validity begins on the purchase day, not when your aircraft lands.
4. Check the allowance in MyLebara.Take a screenshot while you have reliable Wi-Fi, including the expiry and included data.
5. Turn off automatic app updates and cloud backup.These background jobs can consume a 1GB allowance while you are still finding the baggage carousel.
6. Leave mobile data roaming off until the add-on is active.After arrival, connect to Wi-Fi first, check the account, then enable data roaming for the correct SIM.

When the signal bars arrive but the internet does not

If Lebara roaming is not working in Dubai

1. Use Wi-Fi to check MyLebara.Confirm the add-on appears, has not expired and still has data or minutes left.
2. Restart the phone.A clean network registration after landing can solve a temporary connection problem.
3. Check the correct SIM is selected.On a dual-SIM phone, set Lebara for the service you intend to use and make sure data roaming is enabled only on that line.
4. Try automatic network selection first.If it fails, briefly test the available partner networks shown by the handset, one at a time.
5. Check the APN only after the simpler tests.Lebara's current roaming guidance gives uk.lebara.mobi with WAP as username and password, followed by a restart.¹
6. Separate data, calls and texts.Test each once. A working SMS does not prove that mobile data is configured, and a data connection does not prove that voice roaming is available.
