Independent Lebara guide

Two cheap SIMs, one awkwardly clear result

Lebara vs Talkmobile: Cheap Data or Calls Abroad?

Talkmobile wins the blunt price-per-gigabyte contest. Lebara earns its keep with included international calls, a larger European roaming allowance and an unlimited-data option. The network question has become more interesting too.

The two-minute answer

Talkmobile is cheaper until your phone bill goes abroad

Talkmobile's rolling range currently shows 10GB for £5.95, 30GB for £6.95, 60GB for £7.95, 100GB for £9.95 and 150GB for £11.95. Each plan includes unlimited UK minutes and texts.2

Lebara starts a little lower at £5 for 5GB, but its 30GB and 100GB plans cost £10 and £20. The missing context is useful: Lebara includes international minutes across its displayed range, EU and India roaming, and an unlimited-data tier.6

At 30GB, Talkmobile is £3.05 cheaper each month before discounts. At 100GB, the gap is £10.05. That is not loose change found down the back of the sofa. Yet regular overseas calls can eat the difference because Talkmobile charges them by destination zone.

Talkmobile is the easy winner if your needs begin and end with a generous UK data allowance. Its £9.95 plan has the same 100GB headline allowance that costs £20 on Lebara's standard displayed ladder.26

Lebara has two counters. First, the referral offer can reduce its opening cost, so compare the live checkout rather than treating the standard price as holy scripture. Second, it sells unlimited data for £25. Talkmobile's rolling range stops at 150GB.26

Do not buy 150GB merely because it is cheap. A person who uses 8GB has not saved money by collecting another 142GB. They have bought an impressive digital shed and left it empty.

Talkmobile now makes a combined Vodafone and Three claim. Lebara's plan page says it runs on Vodafone. Check each map rather than assuming identical reception.

The shared-network shortcut has expired

Do Lebara and Talkmobile use the same network?

Lebara says, simply, "We run on Vodafone".6 Talkmobile says customers are gaining automatic access to both Vodafone and Three networks as its combined-network rollout expands.3

That gives Talkmobile the stronger network proposition on paper. It does not guarantee a better signal in your house, office or usual train carriage. A national claim cannot see the thick kitchen wall standing between you and the mast.

Talkmobile includes 5G, Wi-Fi Calling, 4G Calling and eSIM on compatible devices. Its detailed network page says 5G and calling features need a compatible handset with current software.23

Check both providers' coverage tools at the places that matter, then test a rolling SIM before moving an important number. Talkmobile deserves the network round for its wider stated access. Your postcode retains the right of veto.

Both include Europe, but the small print is different

European roaming favours Lebara for heavier data use

Talkmobile advertises inclusive roaming in 47 European countries. New customers and people upgrading under its current policy get a 5GB roaming fair-use limit per billing month.25

Lebara says its plans include roaming in the EU and India, with up to 30GB of data under the current fair-use limit.6 That is the better allowance for a holiday full of maps, photos and bored children watching video.

Talkmobile's 5GB is perfectly workable for navigation, messaging and sensible browsing. It is much less forgiving if you stream video or tether a laptop. India is also a clear Lebara advantage because Talkmobile's included roaming claim covers its European list, not India.

Country lists and fair-use limits can change. Open the provider's roaming page before travel, especially if "Europe" in your head includes Switzerland, Turkey or a Channel Island. Geography and mobile billing have never been close friends.

This is where cheap data can acquire an expensive accent

Lebara is much better for international calls from the UK

Lebara includes 100 international minutes on its cheaper displayed plans and unlimited international minutes on the 100GB and Unlimited Plus tiers.6

Talkmobile puts international calls into seven charging zones. Its current table charges 19p per minute to Zone 1, 30p to Zone 2 and 40p to Zone 3, each with a one-minute minimum charge.9

A weekly one-hour call at 19p per minute would cost far more than Talkmobile saves against Lebara's 30GB plan. The exact arithmetic depends on the destination and call length, but the buying rule is simple: frequent overseas callers should price the calls before admiring the data allowance.

If the destination appears in Lebara's included list and you will use the minutes, check the live Lebara referral price. If you never call abroad, Talkmobile's low rolling prices are harder to argue with.

Rolling means rolling, except when it does not

Compare the contract length before the promotional price

Talkmobile displays both 30-day rolling plans and separate 12-month promotions. The eye-catching half-price offers sit on minimum-term deals, while the prices in our main comparison are the ordinary 30-day options.2

Lebara describes its standard range as having no contracts, no credit checks and no annual price hikes.6 Talkmobile also says all its plans have no annual CPI or RPI increase.7

There is still a practical difference between a 30-day plan and a 12-month minimum term, even when neither receives an annual increase. Check the contract label, the post-promotion price and the earliest exit point on the order summary. A bargain that keeps you for a year is a different animal from a bargain you can leave next month.

Talkmobile wins this comparison for the typical UK data buyer. Its rolling prices are lower, its data pots are larger and its stated network access is broader. Lebara wins when the phone regularly crosses borders, either through calls from Britain or roaming abroad.
