When the signal bars have gone missing indoors

Lebara WiFi Calling: Setup, Compatible Phones and Charges

Lebara WiFi Calling uses an ordinary WiFi connection for calls and texts when the mobile signal is weak. It keeps your normal number and phone app, which is rather less faff than asking everyone to install something new.

The short answer

Yes, Lebara supports WiFi Calling on compatible phones

Lebara says WiFi Calling can make and receive calls and texts over WiFi when there is poor or no mobile signal.1 You use your normal number and dialler. The person at the other end receives a normal call, so they do not need the same feature or a special app.8

The catches are ordinary but worth checking. Lebara has to enable the service on the SIM, you need a compatible device, and the WiFi connection must behave itself. A handset can support WiFi Calling in general yet still lack support for a particular network setup.

Do not assume a WiFi symbol proves every call is free. WiFi carries the connection, while Lebara still applies the normal call allowance or rate.

Your phone number and dialler stay put. WiFi replaces the weak first hop to the mobile network.

Same call, different first hop

How Lebara WiFi Calling works

Normally, your phone reaches the network by radio. With WiFi Calling active, the first part of the journey goes through your WiFi and internet connection instead. Lebara then handles it as a phone call tied to your mobile number.

This is useful in thick-walled homes, basement offices and other indoor spots where broadband is healthy but mobile reception is wheezing in a corner. It does not create a mobile signal. It gives the call another route.

The phone can choose between WiFi and the mobile network according to availability and its calling preference. That means the WiFi Calling icon may appear only when mobile reception is poor, even if the feature is switched on.

No separate account

Call from the normal phone app with your normal Lebara number.

No help for bad broadband

A congested or blocked WiFi network can still produce poor audio or prevent the feature working.

No universal phone support

The handset, software and Lebara network profile all need to agree.

No mystery WiFi tariff

Does Lebara charge extra for WiFi Calling?

Lebara says there is no extra charge for WiFi or 4G Calling. If you have an active plan, calls come out of your UK minutes allowance. Without an active plan, standard PAYG rates apply.1

That wording matters. "No extra charge" means there is no separate WiFi Calling fee. It does not turn every destination or number type into a free call. Check what your plan covers before ringing a number that would normally sit outside your allowance.

The WiFi network may also have its own cost, such as paid hotel access. That is separate from Lebara's call charge. At home, it usually just uses the broadband connection you already pay for.

The toggle alone is not the whole test

Which phones are compatible?

Lebara maintains a device list covering phones it knows will work with features such as VoLTE, WiFi Calling and 5G. It also warns that an unlisted phone may still work but may miss one or more of those features.3

Check the exact model, not just the name on the box. A regional variant, imported handset or old software build can behave differently. Lebara's list says iPhones using its Next Gen SIM should run iOS 17.2 or later, while its Samsung, Honor, Vivo and Motorola entries ask for the latest available software. Its current Google section specifies Android 16 for the listed Pixel models.3

The list changes as manufacturers add support, so copying a giant model table here would age badly. Open Lebara's current list and match the complete model before buying. If the phone is absent, treat WiFi Calling as unconfirmed rather than impossible.

Already have the phone? Update its software, insert the active Lebara SIM and look for the WiFi Calling switch. That practical check is more useful than arguing with a specification sheet from three software versions ago.

Three menu paths

How to turn on Lebara WiFi Calling

iPhone

Open Settings, choose Cellular, select the Lebara line if you use more than one SIM, then choose Wi-Fi Calling and switch on Wi-Fi Calling on This iPhone.4

Google Pixel

Open Settings, Network & Internet, then SIMs. Choose Wi-Fi calling, turn on Use Wi-Fi calling and place a test call.5

Samsung Galaxy

Use the Wi-Fi Calling tile in Quick settings, or open the Phone app, tap the three-dot menu, Settings and the Wi-Fi Calling switch.6

Menu names can move after an update. Search the Settings app for "Wi-Fi calling" if the route above differs. Dual-SIM users should make sure they are changing the Lebara line rather than cheerfully configuring the other SIM.

On iPhone and some Android phones, setup may ask for emergency location information. Complete it accurately. Apple notes that an emergency call may use WiFi Calling when mobile service is unavailable, and location information may be used to help responders.4

The labels vary, but all three routes end with the switch and a test call.

Prove it before you need it

How to check that WiFi Calling is actually working

  1. Connect to a trusted WiFi network.Wait for the phone to finish connecting and confirm the internet works.
  2. Check the status indicator.iPhone shows "Wi-Fi" in Control Centre when WiFi Calling is available. Android wording and icons vary.
  3. Place a test call.Use an ordinary number and listen for stable two-way audio rather than admiring the switch.
  4. Try the weak-signal room. That is where the feature earns its keep. Do not deliberately call 999 to test it.

If the call works but the icon disappears elsewhere, the phone may simply prefer the stronger mobile route. That is not a fault. WiFi Calling is a fallback tool, not a badge-collection exercise.

Fix the boring things first

What to do if the switch is missing or calls fail

  1. Wait for SIM enablement.Lebara says it will notify you when the feature has been enabled after joining.1
  2. Check the exact handset.Compare the full model with Lebara's current compatibility list and install the latest suitable software.
  3. Restart the phone.A fresh network registration can make a newly provisioned option appear.
  4. Try a different Wi-Fi network.Apple says not every WiFi network works with WiFi Calling.4
  5. Toggle the feature off and on.Then place another test call rather than relying only on the menu state.
  6. Contact Lebara. If a compatible, updated phone still has no option, ask whether WiFi Calling is active on the SIM.

A public WiFi login page can also get in the way. Open the browser, complete any sign-in and test again. If only one WiFi network fails, the network is the likelier suspect. If every network fails, return to the phone and SIM checks.

The buying decision

Should WiFi Calling affect your choice of plan?

It is genuinely useful if your home or workplace has solid broadband and poor Vodafone mobile reception. It is less useful if the phone is not on Lebara's supported list, your broadband is unreliable or you need guaranteed calling on tightly controlled workplace WiFi.

Check normal coverage as well. WiFi Calling can rescue a stubborn indoor room, but you still want a decent mobile signal on the street, at work and along the routes you use.

Quick answers

Lebara WiFi Calling questions

Is Lebara WiFi Calling free?

There is no separate WiFi Calling fee. Calls use your UK minutes allowance on an active plan, or standard PAYG rates when no plan is active.

Can WiFi Calling work with no mobile signal?

Yes. Lebara says it can carry calls and texts where WiFi is available even if there is no regular phone signal.

Does the other person need WiFi Calling?

No. You call their ordinary number from your normal phone app.

Why is there no WiFi Calling switch?

The feature may not yet be enabled on the SIM, the phone may not be supported, or its software may need updating. Check Lebara's device list before contacting support.

Can I use any WiFi network?

No. Some networks block or fail to support the connection. Try another trusted WiFi network if calls do not work.

Does WiFi Calling use my mobile data?

It uses the connected WiFi network for the call path. The call itself is still counted under Lebara's normal minutes or PAYG charging rule.
