Calling India from the UK: Where Lebara Fits and What to Check
India is in Lebara's current international-call list. The useful question is not whether you can call, but how many minutes you need and whether a normal call beats an internet app.
The straight answer
Lebara makes most sense when India is a regular destination
India appears in Lebara's current included-country list. Standard Indian mobile and landline calls made from the UK can use the international-minute allowance on a plan.46
That is a proper advantage if you call relatives, friends or businesses in India and want an ordinary phone call rather than an app. The catch is easy to miss: the data allowance and international-call allowance do not rise together neatly. The Unlimited Data plan, for instance, currently has 100 international minutes, while the 100GB plan has unlimited international minutes.4
Start with your usual monthly call time. Then pick the smallest plan that covers it and still gives you enough UK data. Buying a mountain of data to obtain the wrong number of call minutes is an impressively modern way to waste money.
Minutes by plan
The allowance has a few surprises
Lebara's current 30-day range has three international-call levels: 100 minutes, 500 minutes and unlimited minutes. Every plan still has a separate UK data allowance.4
| Plan | International minutes | A simple India-calling fit |
|---|---|---|
| 5GB | 100 minutes | Light UK data and shorter monthly calls |
| 30GB | 100 minutes | More UK data, same call allowance |
| 50GB | 500 minutes | Regular calls without needing unlimited |
| Call-heavy option100GB | Unlimited minutes | Long or frequent calls plus substantial data |
| Unlimited Data | 100 minutes | Heavy UK data, but modest India calling |
| Unlimited Plus | Unlimited minutes | Heavy UK data and long regular calls |
Do not assume that "Unlimited Data" means unlimited international calls. It does not on the current range. Also check the plan page again before buying because prices and allowances can change.

What the allowance covers
Ordinary Indian mobiles and landlines are the simple case
Lebara describes its international allowance as covering standard mobile and landline calls from the UK. India is in the current country list.46
Premium and unusual numbers can be treated differently, so a familiar-looking country code is not the whole story. If the number belongs to a service rather than a person or ordinary business line, check the rate before calling.
Included-minute territory
- Call starts on your Lebara SIM in the UK
- Destination is a standard Indian mobile or landline
- Your international allowance still has minutes left
Stop and check
- You have used the allowance
- The number is premium, rural or otherwise unusual
- You are physically in India and roaming
Calling India is not roaming in India. Lebara's rates page says international minutes may be used while roaming in the EU, but that rule does not apply while roaming in India.1 Our Lebara roaming guide covers the travel side separately.
After the allowance
PAYG is 4p per minute, so do the multiplication
Lebara's current India page lists 4p per minute to both Indian mobiles and landlines, plus 6p per SMS.3 At that voice rate, a ten-minute call costs 40p, half an hour costs £1.20, one hour costs £2.40 and 100 minutes costs £4.00.
Those are arithmetic examples, not a quoted bundle or bill guarantee. Lebara says PAYG credit is needed once the plan allowance has run out or when using PAYG, and standard rates then apply.1 Reopen the India rate page before a long call.
PAYG can be perfectly sensible for an occasional short call. For frequent out-of-allowance calls, compare the cost with a larger allowance or an internet app. Ofcom's consumer guidance makes the same practical point: compare the full cost and check whether an add-on would cut the cost of calls outside a package.2
The app question
A normal call wins on simplicity; an internet call wins on long chats
An ordinary mobile call reaches a phone number directly. It can reach landlines, does not require both people to use the same app and is often easier for relatives who have no appetite for troubleshooting microphones at the exact moment everyone wishes to speak.
An internet call uses Wi-Fi or mobile data instead of international voice minutes. If both people already use the same app and have stable connections, it can be the cheaper route for long conversations. Call quality and data availability decide whether that saving is worth the fuss.
USE A NORMAL CALL
Direct and app-free
Best for standard mobiles, landlines, urgent calls and people who simply want to answer the telephone.
Watch: remaining minutes and the live PAYG rate.
USE AN INTERNET CALL
Long calls with good data
Best when both sides already use the same app and have reliable Wi-Fi or mobile data.
Watch: data use, connection quality and app availability.
A candid recommendation
Lebara is easy to shortlist for India, but the right plan is not obvious
For regular ordinary calls from the UK to India, Lebara has a clear advantage: India is included and every current plan carries some international minutes. The 50GB plan is the interesting middle option with 500 minutes. The 100GB and Unlimited Plus plans suit much longer regular calling.
The 5GB, 30GB and Unlimited Data plans all currently stop at 100 international minutes. If your calls are brief, that may be plenty. If they are not, a larger allowance or internet calling is more sensible than repeatedly adding PAYG credit.
Lebara may still be a poor fit if Vodafone coverage is weak where you live or work. Check the places that matter before transferring your number. A generous India allowance cannot rescue a call that never connects.
Quick answers
Questions about calling India with Lebara
Are calls to India included on every Lebara plan?
Current Lebara plans include India in the international destination list. The allowance varies: 100, 500 or unlimited international minutes depending on the plan.46
How much does a PAYG call to India cost?
Lebara's current India page shows 4p per minute to both mobiles and landlines, with SMS at 6p. Check the live page before calling because rates can change.3
Does the Unlimited Data plan include unlimited calls to India?
No. It currently includes 100 international minutes. The 100GB and Unlimited Plus plans currently show unlimited international minutes.4
What happens after my international minutes run out?
Lebara says standard PAYG rates apply and PAYG credit is needed to make the call. Check the India rate page and your balance before continuing.1
Can I use these minutes while I am in India?
Do not assume so. Lebara's current rates page says the international-minute roaming rule used in the EU does not apply in India. Calling from the UK and roaming in India are separate situations.1
