Lebara Roaming Without the Fog: Europe, India and Everywhere Else

Roaming should be a setting, not a geography exam. The useful answer depends on one thing: exactly where you are going.

The short answer

Europe and India are the easy bit, mostly

Lebara currently lets customers use UK plan allowances while roaming in the EU or India at no extra cost, with roaming data capped at 30GB. Outside those areas, you normally need the right roaming add-on or enough PAYG credit.2

The word "Europe" needs care. Switzerland and Turkey are in Europe but are not part of Lebara's EU roaming list. India and Ukraine are separately included. Check the country in Lebara's finder before every trip because destination lists, add-ons and rates can move.1

If that combination fits your travel, compare the current Lebara plans through the referral route. Confirm the discount, normal renewal price and roaming terms before paying. A sunny photograph on a plan page is not a binding tariff.

The included zone

Roam Like Home covers a specific list

Lebara says its SIM-only plans include local use in the listed EU and EEA destinations, plus India and Ukraine. In the included European zone you can use plan data up to 30GB, UK minutes and texts for local calls or calls back to the UK, and included international minutes for calls to eligible EU countries.1

See the current included European destinations

Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Croatia, Cyprus, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Ireland, Italy, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, Netherlands, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain and Sweden. Lebara also lists Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway, Gibraltar, Reunion, Mayotte, Guadeloupe, French Guiana and Martinique. India and Ukraine are included separately.1

That list is more useful than the loose label "European roaming". Switzerland, Albania, Montenegro, North Macedonia, Serbia and Turkey are not on Lebara's current included list. Search the finder rather than deciding by continent.1

The unusual inclusion

India gets Roam Like Home treatment

Lebara's India help page currently says you can use all of your UK plan allowance in India at no extra cost, with the same up-to-30GB data ceiling.4 That is unusually useful for a UK plan, but do not turn a broad promise into an assumption about every call.

Before dialling, check whether the number is local, UK or in a third country and what allowance covers it. Calls made while roaming are not the same product as international calls made from Britain. Our international-calling guide explains that distinction without asking you to admire a globe icon.

The number worth remembering

Your UK allowance can be large. Your roaming ceiling is 30GB.

If your UK plan contains 5GB, you have no magical extra 25GB abroad. You can use up to the plan's own 5GB. If the UK plan contains 100GB or unlimited data, Lebara's current included-roaming ceiling is 30GB.1

The roaming allowance is the lower of your plan data and the 30GB roaming ceiling.

Download films, maps and music before leaving Wi-Fi. Ofcom also suggests switching off data roaming when you do not need it and using local Wi-Fi for data-heavy tasks.8

Outside the included zone

An add-on may help, but compare the whole trip

Lebara's help page says travel outside Europe and India needs an appropriate add-on or PAYG credit.2 The rate finder is the place to check availability, allowance, validity and the standard PAYG rate for your exact country.

Current roaming add-ons can run for 8 or 15 days, starting when you buy them and ending at 23:59 UK time on the final day. Buy too early and part of the allowance may expire while your passport is still in the kitchen drawer.1

Lebara add-on may suit when...

  • You want to keep your usual number active
  • The finder offers enough data for the whole trip
  • Its validity covers your travel dates
  • You need local calls or calls back to the UK

Compare another option when...

  • The country has no suitable add-on
  • You need much more data
  • You will stay for several weeks
  • A local SIM or travel eSIM costs less

Ofcom explicitly suggests considering a local SIM or eSIM, particularly when normal roaming would be expensive.8

Calls have their own map

Local, UK and third-country calls are different

A Lebara roaming add-on's voice allowance currently covers outgoing calls within the country you are visiting and calls back to the UK. Incoming calls also come out of that voice allowance. Calls to a third country need PAYG credit and use standard roaming rates.1

Example: while in the United States, an add-on may cover a call to an American number or back to Britain. It does not automatically make a call to Italy part of the same allowance. This is where people discover that "minutes included" is a sentence with footnotes.

Incoming texts are free under the current add-on guidance, but sending texts follows the add-on's destinations and allowance. Check voicemail too, especially if your phone diverts calls while abroad.

Roam Like Home is for trips

The 120-day test stops permanent roaming

If your use in included roaming destinations is greater than your UK use over any continuous 120-day period, Lebara says it can apply surcharges. The current figures are 0.20p per MB, equal to £2 per GB, 2.4p per minute for outgoing calls, 0.6p per minute for incoming calls and 0.8p per SMS.1

The surcharge comes from your PAYG balance. A fortnight in Spain is the intended use. Moving abroad for a term and treating a UK SIM as a permanent local plan is where the fair-use rule becomes relevant.

Ten minutes before the airport

Make roaming boring

Five-step pre-travel roaming checklist: activate in the UK, check the destination, time any add-on, save APN settings and download essentials
Do these jobs on reliable Wi-Fi before travelling. Airport troubleshooting has enough queues already.
  1. Activate the SIM in the UK.Lebara says roaming will not work if the SIM was not first activated in Britain.1
  2. Search the exact destination.Record the included allowance, call coverage, add-on validity and PAYG fallback.
  3. Time any add-on properly. It starts on purchase, so align the expiry with the trip.5
  4. Save the data settings.Lebara's current fallback APN is uk.lebara.mobi, with username and password both WAP.5
  5. Download what matters.Keep tickets, maps and accommodation details available offline.

Mind ferries and borders

Near a border, your phone can join a network in the neighbouring country. At sea it may connect to a ship's satellite, where charges can be much higher. Ofcom recommends checking the cost and considering manual network selection on ferries or cruises.8

Quick answers

Lebara roaming questions

Is Lebara EU roaming free?

Lebara currently includes Roam Like Home on its SIM-only plans in listed EU and EEA destinations, with plan data usable up to a 30GB ceiling. Check the destination finder before leaving because the list and terms can change.1

Can I use Lebara in India?

Yes. Lebara's current India page says UK plan allowances can be used there at no extra cost, with up to 30GB data.4

Does unlimited data stay unlimited abroad?

No. In included roaming destinations, the current data ceiling is 30GB. A smaller UK allowance remains smaller.1

Can I use hotspot while roaming?

Lebara's current guidance permits tethering from the data allowance in a roaming add-on. Watch the allowance because a laptop can use it briskly.1

Why is Lebara data not working abroad?

Check that the SIM was activated in the UK, your plan or add-on is active, data roaming is enabled and the selected network is supported. If needed, set the APN to uk.lebara.mobi with WAP as both username and password, then restart the phone.15
