Lebara 5G Explained: Coverage, Speeds, Phones and Setup
Lebara includes 5G on its current plans, but the badge in the corner of your screen needs three things to cooperate: the plan, the phone and the place.
The short answer
Yes, Lebara has 5G, and it does not need a premium bolt-on
Lebara says all its current plans include 5G. To use it, you need a 5G phone and local 5G coverage.4 Its dedicated guide adds two practical details: the phone must be unlocked and a Lebara SIM must be in it.1
Lebara runs on Vodafone's UK network, so the relevant map is Vodafone in Ofcom's checker. A full postcode tells you far more than a national coverage boast, particularly indoors.
Start with the postcode
5G coverage is local, and walls remain stubbornly physical
Ofcom's Map Your Mobile compares 4G and 5G signal where you need it.5 Search each place that matters, not just home. Work, the station and the weekly family visit all get a vote.
Coverage is not a promise. Ofcom says congestion, interference, buildings, trees and the handset itself can affect whether a connection is reliable enough for demanding use.6 A map can tell you whether a trial looks sensible. It cannot stand in your kitchen holding your phone.
If you leave a 5G area, Lebara says the handset falls back to 4G automatically.1 That is normal. A phone moving between 4G and 5G is doing its job, not composing a resignation letter.
Use our coverage-checker guide for the indoor, outdoor and route test, and our Vodafone network guide for the host-network detail.
Speed without fairy dust
What should you expect from Lebara 5G?
There is no honest single speed for every Lebara customer. Signal strength, local demand, phone capability and the server at the other end can all move the result. A speed test at 7am beside a window is not a binding contract with the evening rush hour.
Ofcom's UK measurements found that file downloads over 5G were consistently faster than 4G across every file size tested, with 4G taking about twice as long. It also found that 96% of measured 5G connections exceeded 5 Mbit/s, compared with 85% of 4G connections.7
That does not mean every 5G result beats every 4G result. A clean 4G connection can outpace weak or congested 5G. The larger practical advantage is often capacity: Ofcom says 5G can support more connected devices in busy, concentrated places.6
Browsing and messaging
Good 4G already handles these comfortably. Do not expect a spiritual experience from loading a bus timetable.
Large downloads and video
This is where a strong 5G connection is easier to notice, especially when the network has spare capacity.
Busy places
Extra capacity can matter at stations, events and town centres, although local congestion can still drag speeds down.

A phone can be modern without being 5G-ready
Check the exact model, not the family name. Manufacturers often sell 4G and 5G versions of similar-looking phones. Lebara also keeps a device page for features such as 5G, VoLTE and WiFi calling, while warning that an unlisted phone may still work with some features missing.2
Apple says iPhone 12 models and later support 5G with participating providers.9 Lebara's device page separately says an iPhone using its Next Gen SIM should run iOS 17.2 or later.2
For Android, the model suffix matters. Google says Pixel 4a (5G) and later Pixel phones work with 5G service, but carrier and network compatibility still apply.10 Samsung gives the same basic test: supporting phone, supporting provider and a covered area.11
An imported handset deserves extra care because supported radio bands and carrier features can differ by regional model. Check the manufacturer's specification and Lebara compatibility information before spending money.
Switch it on once, then leave it alone
How to enable Lebara 5G
iPhone
Open Settings, then Mobile Data, Mobile Data Options and Voice & Data. Choose 5G Auto for sensible switching or 5G On if you want 5G whenever available.
Google Pixel
Open Settings, Network & internet, then SIMs. Choose the Lebara SIM and look for Preferred network type. Select the option that includes 5G.
Samsung Galaxy
Open Settings, Connections, Mobile networks and Network mode. Choose the mode that includes 5G. Menu names can vary by model and software.
Apple says 5G Auto switches to LTE when 5G offers no noticeable improvement, which can save battery.9 Google's guidance confirms that Preferred network type can offer 5G and LTE choices, but options vary by phone and Android version.10
Dual-SIM users should also check that Lebara is the line selected for mobile data. Otherwise you can spend ten minutes rearranging network settings on the SIM that is not carrying a single byte.
When the icon stays away
Five checks before you call support
- Check the postcode.Look for Vodafone 5G in Ofcom's checker. Test outdoors as well as indoors.
- Check the exact handset.Confirm that your regional model supports 5G and is unlocked.
- Check the data SIM.On a dual-SIM phone, make Lebara the selected line for mobile data.
- Check the network mode.Choose 5G Auto, 5G preferred or the equivalent option rather than LTE-only.
- Refresh the connection.Install software updates, toggle flight mode, restart the phone and try again in a known covered spot.
If mobile data itself is failing, do not keep hammering the 5G menu. Check activation and APN settings, then contact Lebara if the SIM still will not register correctly.
The buying decision
Should 5G decide whether you choose Lebara?
It belongs on the shortlist, not on a throne. If Vodafone coverage is good where you live and travel, included 5G is a useful extra for downloads, streaming and crowded places. If Vodafone is weak in a vital location, the prettiest 5G logo in the brochure cannot improve the radio signal.
Compare the allowance, normal renewal price, international minutes and roaming terms as well. Faster data can also empty a modest allowance faster because high-quality video and large downloads become less annoying to use.
If the network and phone checks pass, open the current Lebara referral offer and confirm the live discount, allowance and later price before paying.

Quick answers
Lebara 5G questions
Does every Lebara plan include 5G?
Lebara says all its current plans include 5G. You still need a compatible unlocked phone and local Vodafone 5G coverage.
Do I pay extra for Lebara 5G?
Lebara says there is no extra 5G charge. Check the live plan and checkout because offers and terms can change.
How fast is Lebara 5G?
There is no fixed speed. Strong 5G is usually quicker than 4G, but signal, congestion, phone capability and the service you are using all affect the result.
Why does my phone keep changing from 5G to 4G?
It may have left 5G coverage, moved indoors or decided that 4G is more efficient. Automatic fallback is normal.
Should I select 5G On or 5G Auto on iPhone?
5G Auto is the sensible default for most people because it can use LTE when 5G offers no clear benefit. 5G On may use more battery.
Can an old Lebara SIM use 5G?
Lebara's current guide requires a Lebara SIM, compatible phone and coverage. If every other check passes but 5G never appears, ask Lebara whether your SIM or account needs updating.
