One radio family, two very different bills
Lebara vs Vodafone: Same Network, Different Prices and Perks
Lebara is the cheap, flexible pick for most ordinary SIM-only shoppers. Vodafone costs more, but its direct plans can buy you broader roaming, eSIM choice, rewards and premium 5G+ features. The network story is no longer as simple as "same mast, same service".
The answer without the sales fog
Lebara is cheaper; Vodafone has the deeper extras cupboard
Lebara's standard page displays 5GB for £5, 30GB for £10 and unlimited data for £25. Those plans include international minutes, and Lebara describes them as rolling, without credit checks or annual price hikes.1
Vodafone's displayed pay-monthly equivalents are £19 for 5GB and £22 for 30GB. Its promoted Unlimited Plus plan is much closer at £26, but the page also shows later annual increases.4
That makes the basic buying rule pleasantly unscientific. If you want calls, texts and data without paying for a premium wrapper, look at Lebara first. If you need direct Vodafone features such as selected worldwide roaming, OneNumber, VeryMe rewards or SuperMobile, compare the exact Vodafone tier rather than the red logo in the abstract.
Open the current Lebara referral plans in one tab and Vodafone's plan page in another. Compare the checkout totals, commitment and features you will actually use.
Same foundations, different front doors
Do Lebara and Vodafone really use the same network?
Lebara says plainly that it runs on Vodafone. That is why both are sensible candidates where Vodafone coverage works well at your home, commute and workplace.1 Use a postcode check and a real-world signal test before switching. National coverage claims cannot tell you whether your kitchen is a tiny Faraday cage.
There is an important new wrinkle. Vodafone now calls its direct service "The Nation's Network", the combined Vodafone and Three network. It says Vodafone and Three customers are gradually gaining automatic access to both where technically available.9
Lebara's own plan page still says it runs on Vodafone. It does not promise the same expanded Vodafone-and-Three access in the material used for this comparison. Do not assume a Lebara SIM and a direct Vodafone SIM will behave identically everywhere simply because they share Vodafone foundations.
The same caution applies to speed and network management. Vodafone labels its ordinary 5GB and 30GB cards with a maximum download speed of 100 Mbps, while some dearer plans are marked uncapped.4 Buy the named plan, not a hazy idea of "Vodafone speed".
Three useful like-for-like checks
Lebara vs Vodafone SIM-only prices
| Allowance | Lebara | Vodafone | Headline gap |
|---|---|---|---|
| 5GB | £5 | £19 | £14/month |
| 30GB | £10 | £22 | £12/month |
| Unlimited data | £25 | £26 Unlimited Plus offer | £1/month |
The 5GB comparison is not perfectly identical: Lebara includes 1,000 UK minutes and texts, while the Vodafone card has unlimited UK minutes and texts. Both data allowances are 5GB. Lebara also includes 100 international minutes.14
At 30GB, both show unlimited UK calls and texts. Lebara includes 100 international minutes and is £12 cheaper at the displayed monthly price.14 That is enough of a gap to require a proper reason for choosing Vodafone.
Unlimited data is the interesting exception. Vodafone's promoted £26 Unlimited Plus card includes European roaming across 52 destinations with a 25GB roaming allowance, while Lebara's £25 unlimited plan includes 100 international minutes and EU and India roaming under Lebara's rules.41 Here, the feature list matters more than the £1.
Vodafone shows its £19, £22 and £26 prices rising by £2.50 at each of the next two annual steps. Its general terms also state a £2.50 annual increase for pay-monthly Airtime and Data plans.45 Lebara says it has no annual price hikes.1
Cheap today is only half the arithmetic
Contracts, price rises and credit checks
Lebara describes its standard SIM-only plans as 30-day rolling, with no contract and no credit check.1 That is useful if your income varies, your credit file is thin, or you simply dislike signing a two-year agreement for a rectangle of plastic.
Vodafone says its pay-monthly SIMs are available on 30-day, 12-month and 24-month contracts. Pay-monthly products are subject to eligibility and a credit check.5 Its headline promotional price may sit on a longer commitment, so open the full plan details before treating the first monthly figure as the whole deal.
Vodafone also has contract-free Pay as you go Plus options, but those are a different product family. Compare their current allowance and renewal rules separately rather than using them to excuse the terms of a pay-monthly card.
If flexibility is the deciding factor, check the current Lebara referral offer and confirm the discounted price is shown before paying.
Travel perks are where the comparison changes
Roaming and international calls
Lebara includes EU and India roaming and international minutes on its standard plans. The displayed allowance rises from 100 international minutes on 5GB and 30GB to unlimited international minutes on its 100GB and Unlimited Plus plans.1
Vodafone sells roaming as a tiered benefit. Its European option covers 52 destinations and its worldwide option covers 84, with a 25GB fair-use limit on pay-monthly roaming.7 Plans without the required roaming package can attract daily charges or need an Extra.
Lebara is usually the cleaner choice for UK-based callers who regularly ring its included international destinations. Vodafone deserves a closer look for travellers who need one of its wider selected roaming tiers. Calling abroad from the UK and using your phone while abroad are different jobs, despite mobile websites doing their best to place them in neighbouring boxes.
What Vodafone charges extra to provide
Vodafone's stronger perk list
All Vodafone pay-monthly SIM-only plans include 5G, and Vodafone says both pay-monthly and Pay as you go SIM-only plans offer an eSIM option.45 If eSIM matters, check Lebara's current device list separately before choosing.
Vodafone's VeryMe programme advertises fresh rewards every week.6 The value is personal. A coffee discount you use is worth money; a prize draw you forget exists is worth a colourful tile in an app.
Premium SuperMobile plans add 5G+ FastTrack, a minimum-speed guarantee under its terms and Secure Net Mobile.10 Selected plans also add wider roaming or OneNumber connectivity. These are real differences, but they only justify the bill if your phone, location and habits can use them.
The sensible winner depends on your shopping list
Which one should you choose?
| Your priority | Better starting point | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Lowest monthly cost | Lebara | Much lower displayed 5GB and 30GB prices |
| No credit check | Lebara | Standard plans do not require one |
| International calls from the UK | Lebara | International minutes included on every displayed plan |
| India roaming | Lebara | Included under Lebara's current roaming terms |
| European or worldwide roaming tier | Vodafone | Selected plans cover 52 or 84 destinations |
| Premium 5G+ features | Vodafone | SuperMobile has FastTrack and a speed guarantee |
| Broad eSIM availability | Vodafone | eSIM offered across its SIM-only plan types |
For most value-conscious SIM-only buyers, Lebara wins. Vodafone becomes the better purchase when you can point to a specific benefit such as global roaming, OneNumber, eSIM support for your device or a premium network tier. If the reason is merely "Vodafone is the main network", keep your wallet closed for another five minutes.
